About

About

Silicon Insights was originally launched as a YouTube channel in 2024 by its founder (and the person writing this) Matthew Connatser after departing from The Register to pursue an independent journalism career. In 2025, the channel was put on pause, and in 2026 the brand was relaunched both on YouTube and with this very blog you're reading, which is hosted via Ghost. Silicon Insights is about computers, the chips that computers run on, and computer software, with a focus on technical discussions that aren't too technical for most people to enjoy.

What Silicon Insights offers to readers

You'll find a wide variety of content hosted on Silicon Insights: news, opinion pieces, analysis, reviews, benchmarks, PC build guides, and more. It's only a one man operation, but I've got about a decade of experience creating content about computers and write pretty quickly, so expect multiple pieces of content every week.

You're also probably wondering whether you have to pay for this content. Currently, everything here on siliconinsights.org and the Silicon Insights YouTube channel is free to read and watch. You get access to everything whether you have a paid subscription, a free subscription, or just manually visit the site every now and then to see what SI has posted lately. This will probably change in the future, but only when SI has a significant number of paid subscribers.

While paying for a subscription doesn't get you anything extra at present, it massively helps out Silicon Insights and my family. Think of it like tipping via Patreon, except better because Patreon takes a 10% cut while here on our Ghost-hosted website, we get the full 100% (minus a 3% processing fee, but Patreon has that too).

What Silicon Insights offers to brands

Silicon Insights isn't just another blog or YouTube channel. Like other outlets, I'm happy to accept samples for reviews, do interviews, get a news story out on a deadline, or even do sponsorships on articles and/or videos (to be clear, you cannot buy positive coverage or an endorsement). However, the business of Silicon Insights goes beyond typical creator content and offers plenty of other services:

  • Mock, internal reviews for companies with an upcoming product
  • Testing data for hardware and software
  • Technical writing pieces

Got a new chip or storage device or cooler coming out and you want to know how a discerning critic would rate it? Silicon Insights can do that for you. Are you a publication that's getting something in for review but don't really have anyone on hand who can test it out? Silicon Insights can do that. Do you need some more technical content written up for marketing or business purposes? Silicon Insights does that.

To be clear, there's a firewall between the content Silicon Insights does for its subscribers and other views, and the content Silicon Insights does for companies and brands. A company that contracts Silicon Insights for any work doesn't get special coverage or treatment in news stories, reviews, analysis pieces, or anything else. But likewise, even if Silicon Insights is critical of a company in its public coverage, that doesn't mean we can't work together on something. It's just business.
